Creative Collaboration with Katie of Creature Fins

One of the highlights of MerMagic Con is the opportunity to collaborate with other underwater creatives. Events like this foster meaningful connections, and working alongside friends like Katie of Creature Fins is always inspiring. From the moment we saw her full-body creature suit in person, we knew it deserved something special—and we were honored to bring that vision to life underwater. This shoot was a true team effort. I was behind the camera capturing the magic, while Abbey stepped in as the model coach to help guide movement and energy underwater. Together, we created a space where artistry could flow freely—literally and figuratively.

We set the scene with our custom kelp props and textured backdrop to evoke an eerie, enchanted kelp forest. The mood was cinematic, mysterious, and otherworldly—a perfect match for the Creature Fins aesthetic. Katie’s suit looked absolutely stunning underwater. The way it moved, the details, the colors—it all came alive in a way that gave us chills. But honestly? That suit would look jaw-dropping in any setting. It’s always a joy to work with fellow creatives who pour their heart and soul into what they make, and Creature Fins’ craftsmanship is next level. Being able to showcase their work in an underwater environment was such a privilege.

I’m constantly exploring new techniques, gear, and visual themes to elevate the work we do at Submerge. The underwater world offers limitless potential for artistic expression—from ethereal fantasy to bold editorial. This shoot was an invitation to experiment, play, and tell a story that only water can bring to life. We can’t wait to create more with Creature Fins in the spotlight!

MerMagic Con is where underwater photography meets the magic of the mermaid world. Each year, this event brings together artists, performers, educators, and conservationists from across the mermaid industry. As the underwater photographer at Submerge, I've had the privilege of attending MerMagic Con every year to capture the enchantment of mermaids in their element. Whether you're an experienced mermaid or just beginning your journey, MerMagic Con has something for everyone.

This year, we offered underwater photoshoots at MerMagic Con, working with skilled merfolk to create stunning underwater portraits. These sessions are ideal for all levels of underwater experience. Each session is typically 30 minutes to and hour and includes professionally edited images. This format gives each client a personalized, high-quality keepsake of their time in the water.

MerMagic Con also features a range of workshops and sessions for learning and growth. From tricks in tails to weight belt basics, the event supports performers and hobbyists alike in developing their underwater confidence. The schedule is packed with activities, including both underwater and on dry land photoshoots, making it an ideal environment to network, practice, and explore the mermaid lifestyle.

Why Clients Choose Submerge for Underwater Portrait Photography

Abbey and I are committed to delivering results that honor both artistic vision and technical excellence. I work directly with each client to understand their goals, and Abbey—our model coach—guides them on breathing techniques, posing, and movement throughout the shoot. Together, we ensure that every photoshoot is both enjoyable and empowering.

Our underwater studio in California is equipped with professional lighting, gear, and safety equipment. Each session is tailored to the individual, whether it's a solo portfolio shoot, a creative concept session, or one of our workshops. Because I oversee all photography and Abbey handles model coaching, clients know exactly who they’ll be working with—building a strong sense of trust and connection.

Being underwater can feel intimidating, which is why we focus on creating a calm, supportive environment. We walk clients through the process step by step, helping them feel comfortable and confident in front of the lens. This approach allows us to capture each subject’s unique personality and artistry in a way that feels authentic and inspired.
