Can You Wear a Wedding Dress Underwater?

A veil that trails and keeps trailing, a skirt that fills half the frame: this is what your own gown does in the water.

Yes, you can wear your actual wedding dress underwater, and most brides who book a bridal session do. A freshwater rinse straight after the session and a launder soon after bring most gowns back fine, and you are only in the water for twenty or thirty minutes.

What does a wedding dress do in the water?

The veil trails and keeps trailing. Fabric and hair flow and swirl, and the gown fills half the frame. Chiffon, tulle and organza open out and keep moving, while heavy fabric just gets heavy, so tell us what you plan to wear and we will tell you how it will move once it is wet.

Will the dress be ruined?

We have put countless gowns and fabrics in pools and open water over the years, and most come back fine. No garment is guaranteed to come out untouched. If the gown is one you could not replace, say so before you book and we will work out the right approach for it together.

What if I would rather not risk my own?

Rent one. We keep a collection of gowns and fabrics chosen to flow underwater, and you can wear one of ours for the session. Bridal sessions cover weddings, engagements and trash the dress, in the studio pool or on location.

How do I plan a bridal session?

It starts with a call, where we plan your looks and the backdrop that suits them. Read more about underwater bridal and wedding photography, see how to prepare, or get in touch with the date and the gown. More answers are on the frequently asked questions page.
